The 19th Century Tombs For Two Anti-Slavery Campaingers Have Been Restored At St Mary's Church In Stoke Newington.

The tombs of James Stephens and Anna Barbauld have been repaired to mark the bicentery of of the UK's abolition of the slave trade. The work on the tombs has been carried out by Rev Greame Watson with the help of conservator and restorer Torquil McNeilage and his assistant Carolyn Robinson.

James Stephens, who lived in Stoke Newington with his family, was an MP and a leading lawyer associated with the slavery abolitionist movement. Anna Barbauld, who was also a Stoke Newington resident, was a leading campainger against the slave trade at the turn of the 19th century.


Rev Watson says that he is very pleased with the result of the £5,700 project which has been funded by the Heritage of London Trust, the Leche Trust and donations from residents.
