It's a commonly held belief that one in ten people are gay or lesbian, so why is there such a big difference between homosexual and heterosexual marriages?

Since Civil partnerships were legalised a few years ago many same sex couples have formalised their relationships and made the ultimate commitment to one another.

But some still say that the government did not go far enough, and that heterosexual couples still enjoy more rights than their gay counterparts; is this true?

Speaking to people on the street and finding out what they knew about gay marriage revealed a mix of misinformation, acceptance and delight.

Do civil partnerships give gay couples the same rights?

I don't really know. I think we've got the same rights; the civil partnerships get the same rights as married couples, no?

Except you can't say marriage.

But you can't use the word marriage.

Two people interviewed together on the street in Hackney

How much progress has been made?

People's opinions still differ but it will always remain the couple's decision.
