In 2005 the Government launched the 'Life in the UK Test'

This test is designed to assess knowledge about British Government structure, society and practical issues and potential citizens must answer at least 75% of the questions accurately to pass.

In the event that a candidate is unsuccessful at the first attempt, they are allowed to retake the test until they pass. The test costs £34 and takes 45 minutes.

The Life in the UK Test

The 'Life in the UK Test' is now a part of British law. If you are an Immigrant and wish to gain status as a British Citizen, you must take the test or you will not get citizenship. We asked the public for their views and tried out some questions from the test on them.

Most knew the answers to the simplest questions but couldn't answer the more complicated ones. Nor could Meg Hillier, MP for Hackney South and an Immigration Minister.

If you put the question in front of me now I don't know if I could pass the test

Some people understood the importance of taking the test and understanding more about the British Culture.

People who approve of the 'Life in the UK' test say it benefits the immigrants by helping them to understand the British culture and language.

Some say that the questions on the test do not benefit immigrants, as they do not need to know some of the things that they are tested on.
