Are Gangs Becoming Teenage Identity

Three teenagers have recently died in south London as a result of the growing gang culture on our streets.

169 gangs have been identified by an unreleased report by the Metropolitan Police. Surprisingly, perhaps, Lambeth did not come out as having the most gangs. Hackney, with a total of 22 identified gangs, topped the list, with almost double the number of the second borough, Enfield.

It is not a race issue, but an area war, with gangs deriving their names from their neighbourhoods.

We spoke to Diane Abbott, MP, who said that gangs should not be "hyped up" by the media, but rather, activities should be provided to keep young people occupied and out of trouble.

The thing about gangs is that for a lot of these boys, the gang is like their family. They think the gang gives them protection, the gang gives them a sense of belonging.
