Hackney goes for gold

The 2012 Olympics are coming to East London. Will this be a good thing or a bad thing for the people living in Hackney? We went onto the streets to find out what locals think.

Most people welcome the decision and say it will put Hackney on the map. The area will be refurbished, transport will be improved, more jobs will be created and it will encourage young people to get involved in sport.

It's great, we welcome it - it's progress, a sign of development. It's going to be of interest to the whole community but especially Hackney.

But there is a price to pay. The young generation will benefit in the long run but local residents will have to contribute towards the cost of staging the Olympics.


It'll be good to have it but I don't know what it'll do to the economy of the people living in Hackney. It was meant to be for the people - but for us who run the shops along here it's not going to be very profitable.

Property prices will go up so people won't be able to afford housing, some businesses have had to close down and people are worried their council taxes might rise.
